Marie Walter's Doughnuts
1 c. sweet milk 1 pkg. yeast
1/3 c. shortening 1 egg
1/4 c. sugar 3 3/4 c. plain flour
1 tsp. salt
Heat milk; pour over shortening, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Stir to mix. Let cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. When 1st mixture is cool, add yeast and egg(beat egg in yeast cup). Add flour; mix well. Let stand until it rises about double. Knead, adding enough flour to form dough to roll out. Roll dough out and cut into doughnuts. Let rise about 1 hour. Fry in hot cooking oi, turning to brown on both sides. Glaze with confectioners sugar icing. (Mix very small amount of water into sugar to make glaze).
